Marketing Mythbusters: The Questions We Always Get Asked

When we get asked “so, what do you do for work?”, we brace ourselves.

The moment we say “digital marketing”, the eyes of every business owner in the room light up, and the line of questioning begins.

It’s no surprise there are a TON of misconceptions about marketing. The world of marketing is vast and limitless. So today, we compiled the top burning questions we get asked.

“I don’t want to dance. Do I HAVE to be on TikTok?"

The Myth: If I don’t keep up with every single viral trend, dance, and audio, I’ll be invisible online.

The Truth: Put the tripod and ring light down for a second, and let’s talk. First things first, let’s get one thing straight. Quality over quantity. Every. Single. Time. You don’t have to keep up with every single trend and post three times a day seven days a week (your audience doesn’t want you to).

Plus, your content needs to make sense for your brand and your audience. If you’re selling professional B2B services, you don’t need to take part in trends on a social media app primarily used by 18-24 year olds for entertainment. Know your audience. Know where they are and what they’re looking for, and build your content strategy around it.

“Can’t I just use AI to do all of my marketing now?”

The Myth: AI can be a copywriter, social media manager, content creator, and a marketer. Just plug in a prompt, and watch the sales roll in.

The Truth: We’re going to hold your hand when we say this: Absolutely not. And your excessive use of AI is driving away customers.

Yes, AI is an incredibly helpful tool for brainstorming and polishing, but using it to completely run your brand is how you drive customers away and become background noise.

Here’s the thing, consumers have developed a sixth sense for AI. Not only can your audience spot AI from a mile away, they completely tune it out the second they get a whiff. It’s true, consumers are actively avoiding brands that use excessive AI. We wrote a whole blog about how to use AI, check it out here.

Your audience wants to connect with you, not a robot. Be authentic, use your own unique voice, and connect with your community.

“My last post got 700 likes, that means I’m doing something right, right?”

The Myth: Likes and followers are the best indicators of success on social media.

The Truth: In 2012, likes and followers meant everything. But in 2026, that’s not the case anymore. Likes and shares are what we call “vanity metrics”. These are the metrics that make us feel good, but they don’t carry a lot of weight.

Think about your nightly doomscroll. How many posts and videos do you mindlessly like without even pausing your scroll? The metrics that really matter are things like shares, conversions, clicks, etc. These metrics are what really show how effective your content is.

“Nobody reads marketing emails anymore, right?"

The Myth: Your inbox is a chaotic wasteland of unread promotional emails that you keep forgetting to unsubscribe from, and you assume your customers are in the same boat. Email marketing is dead, and just straight up annoying.

The Truth: Believe it or not, email marketing consistently has one of the highest ROI’s of almost any digital marketing channel. Most companies will earn somewhere between $10-$36 in return for every $1 spent on email marketing, with 35% earning even more than that.

Because people do read emails, they just don’t read boring emails. If you are constantly blasting your list with “BUY NOW”, yes, you are annoying them. But if you treat your email list like an exclusive club, sharing helpful insider tips, early access, or BTS content, your customers will open it. Social media is great for introducing yourself, but email marketing is where you build and maintain relationships.

The moral of the story is simple. Marketing is just human connection.
